Focke-Wulf Fw 190 G

From TargetWiki

the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 G was a "Jagdbomber mit erweiterter Reichweite" ( = fighter bomber with extended range) developed from the Fw 190 A fighter. in 1942, while the USAAF was building up a large armada of 4 engine bombers, Luftwaffe could only fly small scale fighter bomber attacks on South England.

the series started with Fw 190 A-4/U8, later designated as Fw 190 G-1 or Fw 190 G-4.

this plane could carry 1 SC 500 bomb on an ETC rack under the fuselage and 2 300 liter drop tanks under the wing. the total fuel load including fuel in fuselage tanks was 1124 l. like that the usefull range for low level strikes under the radar was about 1000 -1500 km.

the external load, 2 drop tanks and 1 SC 250 bomb with its ETC fixtures, reduced the low level speed seriously. instead of a continous speed of 500 km/h of a clean 190 A-5, the 190 G-1 could only cruise at 410 km/h with full load.

even after it dropped bombs and tanks, the 3 drag generating ETCs forced it to cruise to 470 km/h at sea level.
