History

The G50 was the first single seat fighter, all metal, designed and flown by Italy, with retractable undercarriage. But despite these improvements, its maximum speed was only 33 km/h faster than its predecessor, the Fiat CR.42. Both types were powered by the 840 hp Fiat A.74 RC38, 14-cylinder, air-cooled radial engine.

Giuseppe Gabrielli of the Aeronautica D'Italia Fiat S.A., started the project in September 1935. The First prototype flown on February 1937. Entered at service in 1938, when twelve G50 were sent to fight in the Spanish Civil War. Pilots found it to be a maneuverable aircraft but disliked the canopy and so it was removed in successive models.

Development

87 planes from model G50 bis serie VII(MM 6328 - 6414) were made by CMASA between 1940 - 1941.

The G50 bis serie VII was largely similar to the initial production series, but the differences included increased fuel capacity, improved pilot protection and a new radio installation. The type was mainly employed in Lybia.
